The book covers a wide range of topics, including the structure of words, the meaning of words, how their spelling relates to pronunciation, how new words are manufactured or imported from other languages, and how the meaning of words changes with the passage of time. It also investigates how the mind deals with words by highlighting the amazing intellectual feat performed routinely when the right word is retrieved from the mental dictionary during conversation. Words of all sorts are examined—from great poetry, nonsense verse and journalism to advertising. It is demonstrated that in their very different ways they are all worthy of serious study.

National foundations are autonomous institutions estab-lished by Mr. Soros in particular countries to initiate and support projects in those countries. There are 24 national foundations in the Soros founda-tions network. They are located primarily in the previously communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, but also in South Africa and Haiti. Each national foundation has its own board of directors and staff who set the priorities for the foundation's work.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe Jahrgang, August 1994) behandelt aktuelle Themen aus Sprachdidaktik, Lehrerbildung und interkultureller Kommunikation. Im Heft werden historische Aspekte des Faches Deutsch als Fremdsprache thematisiert, unter anderem die Situation in Namibia. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Lehrerausbildung, insbesondere auf handlungsorientierten Ansätzen und pädagogischen Konzepten sozialen Lernens. Ausführlich wird außerdem das Konzept des „Transfers“ diskutiert, also die Übertragung von Kenntnissen und Fähigkeiten im Fremdsprachenlernprozess sowie dessen Bedeutung für Motivation und Unterricht auf fortgeschrittenem Niveau.
