Management of technology
This paper addresses the question of how enterprises can improve their competitiveness through the acquisition and development of technology, and hence how countries are able to raise the level of industrial development and grow their GDP. It takes the example of East Asia to demonstrate how fast economic growth can be achieved through the "stages" approach to technology acquisition and development. It also provides some case studies of technology transfer to China as a means of illustrating how successful transfer can be achieved and the problems that can be encountered. Finally, some comparisons are made with, and among, the Arab countries and an attempt is made to draw some lessons for the development of the Arab world from experiences gained elsewhere.

Digital Video Processing. Second Edition
A. Murat Tekalp,The first edition of this book (1995) was the first comprehensive textbook on digital video processing. However, digital video technologies and video processing algorithms were not mature enough then. Digital TV standards were just being written, digital cinema was not even in consideration, and digital video cameras and DVD were just entering the market. Hence, the first edition contained some now-outdated methods/algorithms and technologies compared with the state of the art today, and obviously missed important developments in the last 20 years. The first edition was organized into 25 smaller chapters on what were then conceived to be important topics in video processing, each intended to be covered in one or two lectures during a one-semester course. Some methods covered in the first edition—e.g., pel-recursive motion estimation, vector quantization, fractal compression, and model-based coding—no longer reflect the state of the art.

Cryptography in C and C++
Micheal Welschenbach,CRYPTOGRAPHY IS AN ANCIENT ART, well over two thousand years old. The need to keep certain information secret has always existed, and attempts to preserve secrets have therefore existed as well. But it is only in the last thirty years that cryptography has developed into a science that has offered us needed security in our daily lives. Whether we are talking about automated teller machines, cellular telephones, Internet commerce, or computerized ignition locks on automobiles, there is cryptography hidden within. And what is more, none of these applications would work without cryptography! The history of cryptography over the past thirty years is a unique success story. The most important event was surely the discovery of public key cryptography in the mid 1970s. It was truly a revolution: We know today that things are possible that previously we hadn’t even dared to think about. Diffie and Hellman were the first to formulate publicly the vision that secure communication must be able to take place spontaneously. Earlier, it was the case that sender and receiver had first to engage in secret communication to establish a common key. Diffie and Hellman asked, with the naivety of youth, whether one could communicate secretly without sharing a common secret. Their idea was that one could encrypt information without a secret key, that is, one that no one else could know. This idea signaled the birth of public key cryptography. That this vision was more than just wild surmise was shown a few years later with the advent of the RSA algorithm.

Multimedia Applications of the Wavelet Transform
Claudia Kerstin Schremmer,This dissertation investigates novel applications of the wavelet transform in the analysis and compression of audio, still images, and video. In a second focal point, we evaluate the didactic potential of multimedia–enhanced teaching material for higher education. Most recently, some theoretical surveys have been published on the potential for a wavelet–based restoration of noisy audio signals. Based on these, we have developed a wavelet–based denoising program for audio signals that allows flexible parameter settings. It is suited for the demonstration of the potential of wavelet–based denoising algorithms as well as for use in teaching. The multiscale property of the wavelet transform can successfully be exploited for the detection of semantic structures in still images. For example, a comparison of the coefficients in the transformed domain allows the analysis and extraction of a predominant structure. This idea forms the basis of our semiautomatic edge detection algorithm that was developed during the present work. A number of empirical evaluations of potential parameter settings for the convolution–based wavelet transform and the resulting recommendations follow.
