The first six chapters focus on the different ways to read a text; the second contain over 60 multi-genre selections. Many of the readings are on cross-cultural themes and by multiethnic writers, suggesting that the different meanings we read from pieces are influenced by our heritage and background.

Develoing reading skills
Deanne Milan,The third edition of Developing Reading Skills proceeds from the same premise that governed the first and second editions: good reading and clear thinking go hand in hand. The book is organized around the principle that students can best improve their comprehension and thinking skills first by intensive, analytical practice with short reading passages, followed by the application of these skills to longer and increasingly difficult essays and articles.

English grammar in use: a self-study reference and practice book for intermediate students
R. Murphy,English Grammar in Use is intended mainly as a self-study book, although teachers may also find it useful as additional course material which can he used flexibly either with the whole class or individual students. When using the hook with the whole class, it is suggested that the teacher teaches the grammar points concerned in whatever way he/she wants. In this case the left-hand page is not used actively during the lesson but serves as a record of what has been taught and can be referred to afterwards by the student. The exercises can then he done in class or as homework

The Writer's resource - readings for composition
Susan Day, Elizabeth McMahan,SUSAN DAY has lived in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, for over twenty years, attending Illinois State University as a student (B.S. in English Education, M.S. in English) and working there as a teacher since 1973. Nevertheless, Susie has managed to have an eventful and entertaining life, portions of which she will relate in surprising detail to complete strangers. With Elizabeth McMahan, she has co-authored three college texts for McGraw-Hill: The Writer's Rhetoric and Handbook, The Writer's Handbook, and The Writer's Resource: Readings for Com- position. Because her presentations are practical, funny, and brief, Susie frequently appears as a speaker at professional conventions. If one could make a living as a conversationalist, she would; the occu- pation of writing helpful, amusing textbooks runs a close second.

Professorl Augusts Tentelis
”1936. gadā, tikai 16 gadus pēc darba uzsākšanas LU, A. Tentelim iešķīra LU vēstures zinātņu Goda doktora grādu.’’
