The goal of this book is to “open up” the field of education to a wider range of ideas, to make these ideas more accessible. We think it will be useful to teacher educators, allowing them to reflect on their practice in new and perhaps surprising ways. We also think it will be useful to researchers, leading them to think about their objects of study in new ways. In both cases, we hope that Theory for Education will provide a “detour” through theory, on the way back to practice. We hope, as well, that this book will lead to reading these theorists in primary form. There is no substitute for that kind of work. We hope this book is a beginning for readers, not an end.
