The invention of calculus in the seventeenth century was a turning point in the history of human thought. This turning point made modern science possible. Calculus is the foundation of many branches of contemporary mathematics, and many application of mathematics to the invention of calculus. Two developments prepared the way for the invention of calculus: the gradual extension of the concept of mumber and the fusion of geometry with algebra.
