This book was to have been an updated paperback edition of our study of the rise nt national movements in the USSR, I he Hidden Nations, published by William Morrow, /n that book, we outlined the ethnic and national sources of the USSR's instability that foreshadowed the collapse of the Soviet state. Yet when we came to the task of updating the text, we realized that although we had pointed to the explosive force of rising nationalism in the USSR, the events that led to the tall of the Soviet empire required of us a fundamentally new book.
