This​ book ​was ​born ​at​a​conference ​entitled​ Narrating​ Native​ Histories ​held​ at ​the ​University​ of​ Wisconsin, ​Madison, ​in​ April ​2005,​ a​meeting​ which​ itself​ was​ the​ result​ of​ exchanges​ and​ collaborations​ among​ faculty​ colleagues ​from ​various ​disciplinary departments ​and ​with ​different​ regional​ specialties​ who ​shared​ an ​interest ​in ​Native​studies.

German History 1789–1871

The fi rst edition of German History 1789–1871 appeared about a year after I fi nished writing it in 1995. Looking through the inventory last August, Marion Berghahn, pleasantly surprised to see it still in print and selling well, encouraged me to undertake a second edition, and I snatched at the opportunity. Now, fi fteen months later, after reworking, revising, and rewriting the fi rst edition in ways both major and minor, including discussions of the new literature of almost two decades, especially a fuller han- dling of works in German, the second edition is ready for press.

Humour and Laughter in History

The present volume is the continuation and supplementation of the anthology »History & Humour. British and American Perspectives«, which Barbara Korte and Doris Lechner published at transcript publishing house in 2013. Both volumes are the result of the work of the DFG research group »History in Popular Cultures of Knowledge«, which has, for the past several years, been meeting at the University of Freiburg to discuss the phenomenon of popularizing history and bringing it »up to date«.

THE ENVIRONMENT AND WORLD HISTORY

Environmental history has the potential to transform our understanding of the human past. Like the perspective of gender history, an environmental perspective is not readily contained within existing subdisciplines of history. By focusing on the impact of human activity on the biosphere, the environmental perspective not only opens new topics for investigation but also changes our understanding of the emergence of the modern world.
