AIRPORT
Although much of his adult life was spent in North America, Arthur Hailey was born in Luton, England, in 1920, the only child of working-class parents. After leaving school at fourteen, he had a number of jobs before joining the Royal Air Force (RAF) when war broke out in 1939. His pilot training took him to the United States, and these early "insider" experiences of aviation proved useful later on in his writing. When he left the RAF in 1947 he decided to go and live in Canada where, a few years later, he became a Canadian citizen, settling in Toronto. There he worked for various magazines, but when he sold his first television play Flight in Danger in 1956, he felt confident that he could give up working for others and become a full-time writer. His first marriage, to Joan Fishwick in 1944, ended in divorce. It is since his second marriage to Sheila Dunlop in 1951 that he has written all his best-known works

Developing Grammar in Context
Much time has elapsed since this book was first thought of. We would like to thank first of all Bob Obee for putting us in touch with Cambridge University Press, and then Jeanne McCarten for leading us up to the commissioning of the title and beyond. Since those early days our thanks go also to Alison Sharpe, Mickey Bonin and Brigit Viney, who helped us see the project through to the final stages. Along the way we also owe thanks to Nóirín Burke, Geraldine Mark, to Jean Hudson for CANCODE data, and to all the staff at Cambridge University Press involved in the development and production of the book. Thank you too to Bell International for providing writing time for Mark.

With thanks to Helen Parker of Penguin Longman Publishing, for helping to shape the material and for her encouragement during the writing process; to Theresa Clementson, whose good sense, good humour and hard work made the transition from typescript to printed page seem effortless; and to Diane Winkleby, who opened my eyes to some of the delights of American English.
