A portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
The first, shortest, and most approachable of James Joyce’s novels, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man portrays the Dublin upbringing of Stephen Dedalus, from his youthful days at Clongowes Wood College to his radical questioning of all convention. In doing so, it provides an oblique self-portrait of the young Joyce himself. At its center lie questions of origin and source, authority and authorship, and the relationship of an artist to his family, culture, and race. Exuberantly inventive in style, the novel subtly and beautifully orchestrates the patterns of quotation and repetition instrumental in its hero’s quest to create his own character, his own language, life, and art: “to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.”

AmheIda ostraka from trimithis volume
The ostraka presented in this volume come from excavations conducted at the site of Amheida, located in the northwestern part of the Dakhla Oasis in the western desert of Egypt. Dakhla was part of the Great Oasis of the Graeco-Roman period. Amheida is the largest surviving archaeological site in Dakhla today, although it was certainly smaller in antiquity than the historic capital of the oasis, Mothis (today's Mut), the remains of which survive only in very fragmentary form.

Megaliths of the World Volumes I and II
This ceremonial centre also is unique from an architectural perspective with its central half-buried megalithic enclosure, partitioned by walls converging towards a central cell, and its burials of new-born babies accompanied by rich offerings. Data from the settlements and burials do not supportthe idea of monumentalism associated with stratified societies, where ritual elites would monopolise wealth.

Provincializing Empire Ōmi Merchants in the Japanese Transpacific Diaspora
This project began with a discovery I made a dozen years ago. As I was wrapping up my first book on colonial Korea, it dawned on me that many entrepreneurs and exponents of the Japanese empire hailed from a single province, Ōmi (present-day Shiga prefecture), and their network stretchedfar beyond the Korean peninsula. I too learned that while I grew up in Japan familiar with the famed peddlers of Ōmi, many U.S. colleagues had barely heard of them.
