In his bookEducation in the Knowledge Agel Bereiter (2002) takes a spirited and tough stand on the topic of intellectual skills. He decries the "word magic" that he sees as rampant, reflected in the assumption that anything that is learned will automatically transfer to everything else known by the same name. Educators, for example, take for granted that engaging young children in an activity that involves classifying objects will teach something known as classification skill and, in so doing, enhance mastery of any other activity that shares this label.
