In eukaryotic cells, the flow of information originates in the nucleus. Subsequent to its export into the cytoplasm, an mRNA may be translated in the perikaryal somatic region, or it may continue its travel to distant extrasomatic destinations for local on-sittranslation. These mechanisms may not be mutually exclusive for any given mRNA, but it is assumed that while en route, mRNAs are not actively translated. Many mRNAs, including those that are transported to and translated at extrasomatic target sites, are likely to besubject tospecific translational control.

Despite its roots in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), the global Internet has primarily, although not exclusively, been an avenue and arena of peaceful commerce. With every year, an increasing percentage of the world's economy has migrated from physical media, or older electronic media such as telephones and telegraphs, to the public Internet and to private or semipublic internets. Systems that were once inaccessible to persons ofif-premises, such as power plant controls, are now theoretically accessible to anyone around the world. Other hitherto self-contained net- works, such as those that transferred money, are now commingled with the larger, more public networks such as the Internet or the international phone system.

Human Evolution and Development

This book is the result of years of teaching evolution to students of biology, biomedical science and health sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. As part of the course, the students were to apply their obtained knowledge by writing an essay, under the theme ‘Do humans still evolve?’ This assignment time and again resulted in numerous unexpected and original ideas.
