The big news this issue is the announcement of mandatory registration of drones in the UK, along with safety awareness courses. Let's be honest, it was always going to happen in some form or another, as the rise in drone use was only going to further increase the demand to govern the airspace and give greater control over those using it. As pure as all our intentions are, let us not forget that drones can pose a significant risk to others and the government was always going to act at some point. My only hope is that what we're finally faced with is a relatively quick and painless system - and all signs point towards a simple online solution for both registration and the safety training. There are still a few questions to be answered, though, such as whether all drones will have to be registered (and if a fee is involved will it apply once, annually or for each model?), how the likes of custom builds will be accounted for and how it will be enforced.
