HOLDEN-DAY SERIES IN PHYSICS

This book is intended as a general introduction to modern physics for science and engineering students. It is written at a level which presurnes a prior tull year’s course in classical physics, and a knowledge of elementary differential and integral calculus. The material discussed here includes probability, relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, statistical mechanics, nuclear physics and elementary particles. Some of these top&, such as statistical mechanics and probability, are ordinarily not included in textbooks at this level. However, we have felt that for proper understanding of many topics in modern physics--such as quaIlturn mechanics and its applications--this material is essential. It is our opilnion that present-day science and engineering students should be able to worlk quantitatively with the concepts of modern physics.

An Introduction to the Science of Cosmology

In this book we have attempted to present cosmology to undergraduate students of physics without assuming a background in astrophysics. We have aimed at a level between introductory texts and advanced monographs. Students who want to know about cosmology without a detailed understanding are well served by the popular literature. Graduate students and researchers are equally well served by some excellent monographs, some of which are referred to in the text. In setting our sights somewhere between the two we have aimed to provide as much insight as possible into contemporary cosmology for students with a background in physics, and hence to provide a bridge to the graduate literature. Chapters 1 to 4 are introductory.

Physicists have abandoned determinism as a fundamental description of reality. The most precise physical laws we have are quantum mechanical, and the principle of quantum uncertainty limits our ability to predict, with arbitrary precision, the future state of even the simplest imaginable system. However, scientists began developing probabilistic, that is, stochastic, models of natural phenomena long before quantum mechanics was discovered in the 1920s. Classical uncertainty preceded quantum uncertainty because, unlike the latter, the former is rooted in easily recognized human conditions. We are too small and the universe too large and too interrelated for thoroughly deterministic thinking.

This book provides a concise introduction to the mathematical aspects of the origin, structure and evolution of the universe. The book begins with a brief overview of observational and theoretical cosmology, along with a short introduction to general relativity. It then goes on to discuss Friedmann models, the Hubble constant and deceleration parameter, singularities, the early universe, inflation, quantum cosmology and the distant future of the universe. This new edition contains a rigorous derivation of the Robertson–Walker metric. It also discusses the limits to the parameter space through various theoretical and observational constraints, and presents a new inflationary solution for a sixth degree potential.
