Production of Magnetic Field: When the current i amperes flows through a conductor, the magnetic flux is around as explained by right hand cork-screw rule. To determine the direction of flux created due flow of current in a conductor as wound round the path, consider the diagram in figure 1.1. The flux is along the central axis of the coil (solenoid coil ) as shown. Since the permeability of iron is much higher than that of Air, a major portion of the flux in configuration, likes that of Figure 1.2, remains inside the core instead of traveling through the surrounding Air, which has lower permeability. The small portion of flux that does not travel through the iron core, but travels through Air path is called leakage flux. Treatment of leakage flux is very important in transformer and motors.

Electrical Circuits

Many a time, alternating voltages and currents are represented by a sinusoidal wave, or simply a sinusoid. It is a very common type of alternating current (ac) and alternating voltage. The sinusoidal wave is generally referred to as a sine wave. Basically an alternating voltage (current) waveform is defined as the voltage (current) that fluctuates with time periodically, with change in polarity and direction. In general, the sine wave is more useful than other waveforms, like pulse, saw tooth, square, etc. There are a number of reasons for this. One of the reasons is that if we take any second order system, the response of this system is a sinusoid. Secondly, any periodic waveform can be written in terms of sinusoidal function according to Fourier there. Another reason is that its derivatives and integrals are also sinusoids. A sinusoidal function is easy to analyze. Lastly, sinusoidal function is easy to generate, and it is more useful in the power industry.
