Предлагаемый учебник составлен на основании нашего многолетнего опыта преподавания гидравлики на Гидротехническом факультете (ГТФ) Ленинградского политехнического института (ЛПИ) имени М. И. Калинина. Данный курс публиковался в 1960 г. (в виде трех отдельных книг небольшим тиражом) издательством ЛПИ, а также в 1963 г. и в 1970 г. издательством «Энергия». Книга содержит: 1) материал собственно учебника (полный курс лекций), т. е. теоретические вопросы, которые студент должен изучить и по которым он должен сдать экзамены; объем этого материала составляет около 375 страниц; 2) вспомогательный материал, набранный мелким шрифтом: справочные данные, примеры расчетов, задачи, материалы практических занятий, некоторые факультативные сведения, представляющие интерес, например, для аспирантов.

Прежде всего я хочу поблагодарить Мейв Криган и Кристу Андерсон, чьи имена вы видите на обложке. Когда мы готовили книгу, описывающую NT 3.1, Мейв и Криста были моими исследователями-ассистентами: я поручал им некоторую кропотливую подготовительную работу. Изза чрезмерной занятости я попросил их написать отдельные главы. Эта работа была выполнена во много раз лучше, чем я мог вообразить. Хотя они не участвовали в написании многочисленных дополнений, потребовавшихся для описания версии 4, но большой объем написанного ими материала включен и в данную книгу. Работа Кристы вошла в основном в главы 4, 8 и частично в главу 16, а материал Мейв — в главы 11, 15 и в приложение. Однако это не снимает ответственности с меня, и допущенные ошибки или неточности остаются на моей совести.
