Tools of transport telematics

The fast growth of cities and the rising number of their users leads to an increase in demand for freight transport, thus contributing to an increase in logistic flow streams within a limited area. Currently, freight transport is usually done in an uncoordinated and chaotic manner. Specifying the information needs in the field of urban freight transport (UFT) will make it possible to take control over the increasing disorder in this area and enable its development in accordance with the principles of sustainable growth. This paper is focused on the analysis realized under the project “Analysis of information needs of heterogeneous environment in sustainable urban freight transport system”. The aim of the project is to determine the structures of data relevant for the management of sustainable UFT, establish the sources of data acquisition, the scope and degree of integration, and also indicate the methods of knowledge extraction from the acquired data and information, necessary for improving freight transport effi- ciency in cities.

Usability evaluation for in-vehicle information system

The work presented in this book was prompted by the need for an evaluation framework that is useful and relevant to the automotive industry. It is often argued that Ergonomics is involved too late in commercial project development processes to have substantive impact on design and usability. In the automotive industry, and specifically in relation to In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS), a lack of attention to the issue of usability not only can lead to poor customer satisfaction but can also present a significant risk to safe and efficient driving. Mathematical Theories of Traffic Flow

The population of the earth has been persistently increasing throughout recorded history, but only within the twentieth century has its size become an important obstacle to orderly civilization. One of the problems created by this growth, which has proved to be of some mathematical interest, is that of congestion. On land and in the air, in vehicles and on foot, people now get in each others’ way to an extent far surpassing that of any previous age. There may have been overcrowding in ancient Rome or Elizabethan London, but it can hardly have constituted the hazard, the inconvenience, or the expense which it does today. We see congestion not only in transportation, but in virtually every aspect of modern life: communication, urban development, commercial organization, reticulation of utilities, mass production, and perhaps even agriculture.

Public Transit Planning and Operation

The following story may serve to help understand the stimulus behind this book: A ship is sailing through a stormy ocean, and a little girl, who happens to be the captain’s daughter, is playing on the deck when all of a sudden a large wave carries her overboard into the sea. The captain, who sees this from his post, immediately orders his sailors to jump into the ocean and save the girl, but no one dares for fear of risking his life. In desperation, the captain turns to the passengers and asks them for help while promising that whoever saves his daughter will get anything he or she wants as a reward. Again, no one reacts. But then suddenly a man with a long beard, who had been standing by the railing, lurches overboard into the sea. The sailors throw him a life preserver, and fortunately he manages to lift the little girl safely back on deck and into the arms of her father. The captain then hugs the man, who is thoroughly drenched, and says he will give him anything he wants, just name it. The hero’s response: “I don’t want anything. I just want to know who pushed me. . . .”
