The second, revised edition of Key Concepts in Literary Theoryhas been expanded in two of its three sections, ‘Concepts andTerms’, and ‘Chronology of Critical Thinkers, with Bibliogra-phies’. With the intention of providing a more comprehensive coverage, and so filling in what, in retrospect, now appear obvious omissions, more than eighty terms and their definitions have been added to the first part of the volume. It is hoped that the changes provide additional usefulness to the reader, while,equally, the volume has retained the accessibility, ease of refer-ence, and ‘portability’ of the first volume. Of the inclusions, themajority are drawn from psychoanalysis, reflecting the continued and sustained interest in this particular approach to literarystudies, even while the fortunes of other discourses appear tohave waned somewhat. Of the remaining other inclusions, severalare ‘formalist’ in nature, concerned with grammatical, inguistic,and rhetorical terminology that has found a renewed currency inparticular areas of discursively focused literary theory. Finally,with regard to inclusion, those concepts or terms not coveredobviously by a psychoanalytic or linguistic rubric are drawn from historically or sociologically inflected or influenced critical modes. The study of English literature in the early twenty-fi rst century is host to an exhilarating range of critical approaches, theories and historical perspectives. ‘English’ ranges from traditional modes of study such as Shakespeare and Romanticism to popular interest in national and area literatures such as the United States, Ireland and the Caribbean. The subject also spans a diverse array of genres from tragedy to cyberpunk, incorporates such hybrid fi elds of study as Asian American literature, Black British literature, creative writing and literary adaptations, and remains eclectic in its methodology.Such diversity is cause for both celebration and consternation. English is varied enough to promise enrichment and enjoyment for all kinds of readers and to challenge preconceptions about what the study of literature might involve.

American culture in the 1910s

There is certainly little disputing that the war changed American culture enormously. It cemented the United States as the world’s economic superpower and produced the fi rst ‘American moment’ in world affairs, which arrived as American armies proved decisive in their fi rst- ever campaign in Europe and Wilson was briefl y the global visionary proposing a new world order in his campaign for the four-teen points at Versailles. The war set back the European economy by eight years and advanced the US economy by six – establishing the United States as both the world’s leading economy and creditor.
