El Manual de gramática del español constituye una propuesta pedagógica destinada a estudiantes universitarios de los primeros cursos y a docentes de los diversos niveles que deseen actualizar sus conocimientos de gramática española. En él se exponen las cuestiones fundamentales de la sintaxis del español, así como su relación con el léxico y el discurso, a partir de los conceptos teóricos y de los principios metodológicos necesarios para la descripción de la lengua. Más que una mera exposición de temas teóricos, esta obra pretende que el lector aprenda a hacer gramática en el sentido de que se habitúe a observar el funcionamiento del sistema lingüístico, a reflexionar sistemáticamente sobre la lengua y a argumentar para sustentar las posiciones que adopta, en forma similar a la del gramático, que debe justificar sus decisiones en la construcción de la gramática.

Para ello, cada capítulo contiene una amplia gama de ejercicios destinados a la comprensión integral de los temas: el criterio que se ha privilegiado ha sido el de propiciar la identificación de las unidades y la construcción de estructuras de acuerdo con las consignas, la fundamentación del análisis y la selección entre propuestas alternativas. Para confrontar los resultados obtenidos, el lector podrá consultar las soluciones en la parte final.
