IBN AL-HAYTHAM’S THEORY OF CONICS, GEOMETRICAL CONSTRUCTIONS AND PRACTICAL GEOMETRY

This book provides a unique primary source on the history and philosophy of mathematics and science from the medieval Arab world. The present text is complemented by two preceding volumes of A History of Arabic Sciences and Mathematics, which focused on founding figures and commentators in the ninth and tenth centuries, and the historical and epistemological development of ‘infinitesimal mathematics’ as it became clearly articulated in the oeuvre of Ibn al-Haytham. This volume examines the increasing tendency, after the ninth century, to explain mathematical problems inherited from Greek times using the theory of conics. Roshdi Rashed argues that Ibn al-Haytham completes the transformation of this ‘area of activity’ into a part of geometry concerned with geometrical constructions, dealing not only with the metrical properties of conic sections but also with ways of drawing them and properties of their position and shape.

Biology Unmoored melanesian reflections on life and biotechnology

My doctoral research was made possible by fellowships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, as well as a research grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. I am deeply grateful to both of these organizations for their financial support of my fieldwork in Papua New Guinea.

Jung to live by

Far from mystical, Jung's theories can be easily applied to everyday life, and this book shows readers how. It includes important issues such as how to determine personality style, what inner forces influence likes and dislikes, spotting different complexes, how to transform one's world, and more.

Biology of SPIDERS

It is now exactly 30 years that Biology of Spiders was fi rst published, and I never expected nor planned to follow up with any further editions. When the science editor of Oxford University Press asked me last year whether I would prepare a third edition, I had at fi rst strong reservations because I knew vaguely how much work would be in stock for me: 12years had passed since the second edition, and literally thousands of articles about spiders had been published during that time.

ROCKET PROPULSION ELEMENTS

The book’s cover shows a typical separation of a payload stage or satellite from an upper stage of a space flight vehicle in the vacuum of space. There are two rocket propulsion systems. The liquid propellant rocket engine on the upper stage (on the lower left) has just lifted the satellite into space and has just been shut down. The reaction control system on the payload stage has four small inclined thrusters, which can be seen during their firing operation; they are moving the payload away from the expended upper stage. A small thruster’s plume (flame) has a bright, elliptically shaped, hot gas, very small core, which is visible. The hot exhaust gases disperse from this core in all directions, and this part of the plume is almost invisible.

STRAIGHT AND CROOKED THINKING

IN any book on this subject, the author has to make the difficult choice between taking his examples of crooked thinking from live controversial questions such as politics, and choosing them from the hackneyed and trivial sources favoured by the academic text-books. There are many advantages in adopting the latter course. Most important of all is the fact that the illustration of a faulty argument by a reference to Socialism or disarmament tends to distract the reader's attention from, the nature of the argument to the truth of the statement. For this reason it is impossible altogether to give up the use of trivial illustrations. Where-ever it is possible, however, I have made my illustrations from living controversial issues and from arguments that are actually used in defence of them. This choice may give offence to some reader who find that I have held up to ridicule arguments in defence of positions that are dear to them. In such cases, however, they can replace them by illustrations of similar crooked thinking on the part of those with whom they disagree.

THE BIOLOGY OF ODORS: SOURCES, OLFACTION AND RESPONSE

In a social context, body odors act as effective psycho-biological signals modulating interpersonal interactions, but also as several physiological processes. This new book presents current research in the study of the biology, sources, olfaction and response to odors.

COLLEGE ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY

We are proud to offer the seventh edition of College Algebra and Trigonometry. Your success in college algebra and trigonometry is important to us. To guide you to that success, we have created a textbook with features that promote learning and support various learning styles. These features are highlighted below. We encourage you to examine the features and use them to help you successfully complete this course.

College Trigonometry

We have retained our basic philosophy, which is to deliver a comprehensive and mathematically sound treatment of the topics considered essential for a college algebra course. To help students master these concepts, we have maintained a dynamic balance among theory, application, modeling, and drill. Carefully developed mathematics is complemented by abundant, relevant, and contemporary applications, many of which feature real data and tables, graphs, and charts. Ever mindful of the motivating influence that contemporary and appropriate applications have on students, we have included many new application exercises from a wide range of disciplines, and in new formats. For example, a new Quantitative Reasoning feature is found at the end of each chapter. Students are urged to investigate concepts and apply those concepts to a variety of contexts while testing the reasonableness of their answers. Applications require students to use problem-solving strategies and newly learned skills to solve practical problems, demonstrating the value of algebra. Many application exercises are accompanied by a diagram that helps students visualize the mathematics of the application.
