Binding Space: The Book as Spatial Practice

Artists’ books in particular – that is, a book made as an original work of art, with an artist, designer or architect as author – have certain qualities and characteristics, quite different from the conventional presentation and documentation of architecture. Paginal sequentiality, the structure and objecthood of the book, and the act of reading create possibilities for the book as a site for architectural imagining and discourse. In this way, the form of the book affects how the architectural work is conceived, constructed and read.

Both these books are meant as textbooks for undergraduates and postgraduates students of civil engineering specializing in Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Engineering. Je dédie ce livre à mes six enfants : Madiba et Makaziwe (ma première fille), qui sont maintenant décédés, et Makgatho, Makaziwe, Zenani et Zindzi, dont le soutien et l’amour me sont précieux ; à mes vingt et un petits-enfants et à mes trois arrière-petits-enfants qui m’ont apporté beaucoup de joie ; et à tous mes camarades, mes amis et mes compagnons sud-africains au service de qui je suis, et dont le courage, la détermination et le patriotisme restent ma source d’inspiration.
