This book has evolved from ANU College of Law, Centre for International and Public Law’s Seventeenth Annual Public Law weekend, held at The Australian National University from 20–22 September 2012. The idea for the conference theme, ‘Law’s Challenge to Democracy/Democracy’s Challenge to Law’ was formulated through our discussions with Kim’s ANU colleague, Dr Katharine Young, who assisted us in the work associated with organising the conference. We thank her for her enthusiastic intellectual contribution to the foundations for this book

The Impact of Covid-19 on the Future of Law.

It is a great honour and privilege to write this preface as a Dean who joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg in March 2021. The era of COVID-19 fast-tracked us into the realities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and demanded resilience, strength, and agility to adapt to changing conditions. While the full impact of COVID-19 remains uncertain, it is generally accepted that it will continue to fundamentally transform all aspects of our occupational and personal lives. This was the backdrop to our discussions at our Dean’s Committee when the idea was sparked to do a book project on the impact of COVID-19 on Law. At this Committee, the title of the book “The Impact of COVID-19 on the Future of Law and Related Disciplines” was birthed.

In 1903 Tolstoy, ensuing the plea of Sholem Aleykhem (pseud. of Solomon N. Rabinovich), wrote «Three tales» for a Yiddish miscel- lany in aid of the Jews who were victims of the Kishinev pogrom. Sholem Aleykhem obtained from the writer the first rights to publish; he naively believed that he could freely dispose of the stories, hence he undertook agreements for simultaneous translations of the «Three Tales» into the major Western languages in order to increase fundrais- ing for the Jews.

Intellectual Property Law in Africa.

Examining the harmonisation of intellectual property (IP) policy, law and administration in Africa, this book evaluates the effectiveness of efforts to establish continental IP institutions and frameworks. It also considers sub-regional initiatives led by the regional economic communities and the regional IP organisations, focusing on relevant protocols and agreements that address IP as well as the implementing institutions. The book assesses the progress of such initiatives with particular reference to the current socio-economic status of African states. It argues that that harmonisation initiatives need to be crafted in a way that is supportive of the developmental goals of African states and advocates for due consideration of individual states’ unique conditions and aspirations. This book will be of great relevance to scholars and policy makers with an interest in IP law and its harmonisation in Africa.
