Mathematical challenges for able pupils
You will probably teach able pupils in their own class for their daily mathematics lesson. They will cover the same topics as their peers but at a level to match their abilities. You can stretch them through differentiated group work, harder problems for homework and extra challenges – including investigations using ICT – which they can do towards the end of a unit of work when other pupils are doing consolidation exercises. The planning and structure of the National Numeracy Strategy address the needs of all pupils and help you to manage classes with wide-ranging attainment groups. Each pupil, very able or less able, needs to be part of one of these groups for at least some of the time and not restricted totally to individual working.

Math for Real Life
Many people react much as the mother on the television show The Middle did when her son got a D on a math paper: “Math is very important in life. you use math in everything… . oh even I can’t say it like i believe it.” What are students thinking when they say, “Where are we ever going to use this?” yes, it could be a cynical ploy and not really a legitimate question. Maybe it’s an attempt to divert the teacher’s attention away from the math at hand. Maybe it’s just a chance to stir things up so it gets a little interesting.

Mathematics 6
The Mathematics curriculum guides for Newfoundland and Labrador have been derived from The Common Curriculum Framework for K-9 Mathematics: Western and Northern Canadian Protocol, 2006. These guides incorporate the conceptual framework for Grades Kindergarten to Grade 9 Mathematics and the general outcomes, specific outcomes and achievement indicators established in the common curriculum framework. They also include suggestions for teaching and learning, suggested assessment strategies, and an identification of the associated resource match between the curriculum and authorized, as well as recommended, resource materials.

Architecture in Japan

Basic fluid mechanics and hydraulic machines
Fluid mechanics is concerned with the behaviour of liquids and gases at rest and in motion. The proper understanding of mechanics of fluids is important in many branches of engineering: in biomechanics the flow of blood is of interest; ocean currents require a knowledge of fluid mechanics; chemical processing of plants require a thorough knowledge of fluid mechanics; aeronautical engineers require knowledge of flow of air over the aircraft to reduce drag and increase lift; mechanical engineers require knowledge of fluid properties to design pumps, water turbines, gas turbines and rockets; civil engineers require fluid mechanics to study river currents and erosion; and environmentalists require knowledge of fluid properties for solving pollution problems of air and water to control flood, irrigation channels, etc.

Civil engineering hydraulics
This book is designed to meet the special, but not exclusive, needs of civil engineering students reading for degrees and diplomas and for Engineering Council Parts I and II examinations at universities and colleges of higher education. Having as its main feature a substantial number of worked examples, its purpose is to augment lecture courses and standard textbooks on fluid mechanics and hydraulics by illustrating the application of the underlying theory to a wide range of practical situations. The inclusion of exercise problems, with answers, will enable students to assess their understanding of the theory and methods of analysis and design. Aspects of relevant theory, in concise form and accompanied by explanation, are included at the beginning of each chapter. The book should prove useful not only to students but also to practising engineers as a concise working reference.

The topkapi scroll-geometry and ornament in Islamic architecture
Drawings can reveal much about architectural practice and design methods, particularly when a building tradition lacks theoretical treatises; the Islamic architectural heritage is a case in point. In the premodern Muslim world references to archi- tecture were often embedded in a wide variety of nonarchitectural texts and "how-to" manuals providing simple instructions without theoretical elaboration.

Environmental Hydraulics of Open Channel Flows
Rivers play a major role in shaping the landscapes of our planet (Table P.1, Fig. P.1). Extreme flow rates may vary from zero in drought periods to huge amount of waters in flood periods. For example, the maximum observed flood discharge of the Amazon River at Obidos was about 370 000 m3/s (Herschy 2002). This figure may be compared with the average annual discharges of the Congo River (41 000 m3/s at the mouth) and of the Murray-Darling River (0.89 m3/s at the mouth) (Table P.1). Even arid, desertic regions are influenced by fluvial action when periodic flood waters surge down dry watercourses (Fig. P.1(a)).
