In November 2018 Hong Kong’s Le Méridien Cyberport hotel became the epicenter of controversy about Jiankui He, a Chinese researcher who was staying there when ajournalist revealed he had created the world’s fi rst “edited” babies.

New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences

This report has been reviewed in draft form by individuals chosen for their diverse perspec tives and technical expertise, in accordance with procedures approved by the National Research Council’s Report Review Committee. The purpose of this independent review is to provide candid and criti cal comments that will assist the institution in making its published report as sound as possible and to ensure that the report meets institutional standards for objec tivity, evidence, and responsiveness to the study charge. The review comments and draft manuscript remain confidential to protect the integrity of the deliberative process.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMON METRICS FOR ADVANCING SOCIAL SCIENCE THEORY AND RESEARCH

In February 2010, the National Research Council (NRC) convened a workshop to investigate the feasibility of developing well-grounded com mon metrics to advance behavioral and social science research, both in terms of advancing the development of theory and increasing the utility of research for policy and practice. A planning committee was appointed by the NRC’s Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE) to organize the event, structure the sessions, select the partici pants, and ensure that the workshop would address the variety of research methods and data sets.
