GRAVITATION AND COSMOLOGY: PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS OF THE GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY

Now that this book is done I can look back, and identify two purposes which led me to begin writing, and which have guided the work to completion. One good practical purpose was to bring together and assess the wealth of data provided over the last decade by new techniques in experimental physics and in optical, radio, radar, X-ray, and infrared astronomy. Of course, new data will keep coming in even as the book is being printed, and I cannot hope that this work will remain up to date forever. I do hope, however, that by giving a comprehensive picture of the experimental tests of general relativity and observational cosmology, I will help to prepare the reader (and myself) to understand the new data as they emerge. I have also tried to look a little way into the future, and to discuss what may be the next generation of experiments, especially those based on artificial satellites of the earth and sun.

This is a comprehensive sourcebook of definitions, formulas, units, constants, symbols, conversion factors, and miscellaneous data for use by engineers, technicians, hobbyists, and students. Some information is provided in the fields of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Lists of symbols are included. Every effort has been made to arrange the material in a logical manner, and to portray the information in concise but fairly rigorous terms. Special attention has been given to the index. It was composed with the goal of making it as easy as possible for you to locate specific definitions, formulas, and data. Feedback concerning this edition is welcome, and suggestions for future editions are encouraged.

Geometry, Topology and Physics

This book is a considerable expansion of lectures I gave at the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, University of Sussex during the winter term of 1986. The audience included postgraduate students and faculty members working in particle physics, condensed matter physics and general relativity. The lectures were quite informal and I have tried to keep this informality as much as possible in this book. The proof of a theorem is given only when it is instructive and not very technical; otherwise examples will make the theorem plausible. Many figures will help the reader to obtain concrete images of the subjects.

GEOMETRIC OPTICS

Geometrical optics is both the object of abstract study and a body of knowledge necessary for design and engineering . The subject of geometric optics is small , since so much can be derived from a single principle , that of Fermat , and large since the consequences are infinite and far from obvious . Geometric optics is deceptive in that much that seems simple is loaded with content and implications , as might be suggested by the fact that some of the most basic results required the likes of Newton and Gauss to discover them . Most of what appears complicated seems so because of obscuration with mathematical terminology and excessive abstraction . Since it is so old , geometric optics tends to be taken for granted and treated too casually by those who consider it to be ‘‘understood . ’’ One consequence is that what has been long known can be lost if it is not recirculated by successive generations of textbook authors , who are pressed to fit newer material in a fairly constant number of pages
