Geoinformation Technologies for Geocultural Landscapes: European Perspectives

One of the main challenges in the fi eld of landscape studies is to make visible and analysable the complex and sometimes sharp links that articulate landscape as a social construction. This requires a specific methodology supported by a series of techniques specifi cally developed for the research of landscape. In this context, the Action COST A27 “Understanding pre-industrial structures in rural and mining landscapes (LANDMARKS)” decided to approach some of the most relevant methodological and technical aspects on geoinformation technology, one of the most innovative areas in the field of landscape studies.

The Ink of the Scholars Reflections on Philosophy in Africa

“The Ink of the Scholars is more precious than the blood of the martyrs” is a saying from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that gives its title to this book. Ahmad Bâba, arguably the most famous scholar from Timbuktu, quotes that statement and makes it the heart of his work On the Merits of Scholars, a reflection on the importance of the pursuit and the transmission of knowledge. Such a title can mcertainly serve as an emblem for his hometown, as Timbuktu was, historically, an intellectual beacon, an important center of learning and written erudition.
