Goguryeo was founded by King Jumong near Zolmon, China (Huanren), in 37 BC. King Yuri, the 2nd king of Goguryeo, moved the capital to Gungnaeseong Fortress, and during the reign of King Gwanggaeto, its 19th king, Goguryeo became the most powerful state in Northeast Asia, its territory encompassing the central and northern part of the Korean Peninsula and the northeast region of China.
