Among the estimated 50,000 to 200,0001 Korean young girls and women who were mobilized as sex slaves for the Japanese military, only 240 of them were registered as comfort girls-women with the South Korean government by the end of 2018, and only twenty are still alive today (as of August 31, 2019). Most of them are in their late 80s and 90s. Out of the twelve comfort girls-women whose stories are shared in this volume, only three are still alive today.
