It has been 2 decades since the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources first published Dogs: Standards and Guidelines for the Breeding, Care, and Management of Laboratory Animals (National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C., 1973). During that period, great strides have been made in improving care and management techniques, making available specific-pathogen-free and purpose-bred dogs, and identifying dogs with precisely defined genetic disorders.

Vitamin Tolerance of Animals Subcommittee on Vitamin Tolerance Committee on Animal Nutrition Board on Agriculture National Research Council

The presumed upper safe levels of vitamins in this book are meant to be used as guidelines to ensure that vitamin supplementation does not adversely affect animal health. The subcommittee's objectives were to focus on: (1) vitamin tolerance of domestic and laboratory animals under different nutritional and physiological states, (2) biological measures that can be used as criteria to establish tolerance, and (3) areas of incomplete knowledge.

Argentina: Economic, Political and Social Issues

Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic is a South American country, constituted as a federation of twenty-three provinces and an autonomous city. It is second in size on the continent to Brazil and eighth in the world. Argentina occupies a continental surface area of 2,766,890 km² (1,068,302 sq mi) between the Andes mountain range in the west and the southern Atlantic Ocean in the east and south. It is bordered by Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast, and Chile in the west and south. The country claims the British controlled territories of the Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Argentina also claims 969,464 km² (374,312 sq mi) of Antarctica, known as Argentine Antarctica, overlapping other claims made by Chile and the United Kingdom. Argentina has the highest Human Development Index level and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in purchasing power parity in Latin America. The country is currently classified as an Upper-Middle Income Country by the World Bank, or as a secondary emerging market. Argentina's nominal GDP is the 31st largest economy in the world. Referring back to the first uses of the expression, we can respond that the animal question was principally a question of animal ethics: what moral responsibility do humans have towards non- human animals? Asked first in English, the animal question began emerging in the early nineteenth century. In an 1829 treatise on horses, John Lawrence uses the question as a section title to echo a question that he had asked forty years earlier in his “first essay on the duties of man towards those animals committed by nature to his charge.”

We have divided the book into two sections: Part 1 consists of essays that explore theoretical underpinnings of animal meaning. at the center of these chapters is the animal— the animal as an author who leaves traces of his or her meaning, the animal as a pest who embodies social tensions and conflicts, and the animal as kin with whom we share the act of consumption.
