Digitally Coloring Quasi-mode (Want to get started with GIPM)

Issue 12 features an article called "Digitally Coloring Quasi-mode" that was written by Martín Eschoyez and edited by Debi Dalio. In this multi-page tutorial, Martín explains one of his techniques that gives life to hand-drawn graphics. Martín started by sketching something that finally turned into this big eyed character with a dinosaur tail. It is amazing what one can create by combining a hand-drawn sketch with digital post processing using open source and free GIMP. I believe this is the last content edited by Debi Dalio for GIMP Magazine. Again, we would like to sincerely thank Debi for her amazing contributions to GIMP Magazine over the years. At the time of writing this (late April), the Libre Graphics Meeting 2015 is right around the corner and I plan to attend to meet some amazing people from around the world who make open source graphics software happen. Without them none of this would be possible.

Graphic design and print production fundamentals

This textbook — written by a group of select experts with a focus on different aspects of the design process, from creation to production — addresses the many steps of creating and then producing physical, printed, or other imaged products that people interact with on a daily basis. It covers the concept that, while most modern graphic design is created on computers using design software, the ideas and concepts don’t stay on the computer. The ideas need to be completed in the computer software, then progress to an imaging (traditionally referred to as printing) process. Keywords are highlighted throughout and summarized in a Glossary at the end of the book, and each chapter includes exercises and suggested readings.

Introduction to Computer Graphics

The term “computer graphics” refers to anything involved in the creation or manipulation of images on computer, including animated images. It is a very broad field, and one in which changes and advances seem to come at a dizzying pace. It can be difficult for a beginner to know where to start. However, there is a core of fundamental ideas that are part of the foundation of most applications of computer graphics. This book attempts to cover those foundational ideas, or at least as many of them as will fit into a one-semester college-level course. While it is not possible to cover the entire field in a first course—or even a large part of it—this should be a good place to start.

Language Strategies for the Domain of Colour

This book presents a major leap forward in the understanding of colour by showing how richer descriptions of colour samples can be operationalized in agent-based models. Four different language strategies are explored: the basic colour strategy, the graded membership strategy, the category combination strategy and the basic modification strategy. These strategies are firmly rooted in empirical observations in natural languages, with a focus on compositionality at both the syntactic and semantic level. Through a series of in-depth experiments, this book discerns the impact of the environment, language and embodiment on the formation of basic colour systems. Finally, the experiments demonstrate how language users can invent their own language strategies of increasing complexity by combining primitive cognitive operators, and how these strategies can be aligned between language users through linguistic interactions.
