Teaching Translation and Interpreting 2.

The present volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the Second Language International Conference: 'Teaching Translation and Interpreting: Insights, Aims, Visions’, which took place at Elsinore, Denmark, in June 1993. The volume is dedicated to the teaching of translation and interpreting as an activity which is discussed internationally. In editing the volume, we have chosen to start out from insights into multi- and plurilingual settings, then proceed to discussions of aims for practical work with students, and to end with visions of future developments within translation for the mass media and the impact of machine translation.

Simultaneous Interpretation A cognitive-pragmatic analysis.

The ambition of this book is twofold: firstly, to update the state of the art in research on simultaneous interpretation with contributions from modem linguistic and cognitive theory, and in so doing, to make a critical examination of the ‘primitives’ of translation studies; and secondly, to demonstrate the value of T & 1 data to the study of language and the mind. Becoming a Translator An Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Translation .

This book has taken shape in interaction with teachers and students of translation in the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and England. Eileen Sullivan’s invitation to tour central Mexico in the fall of 1994 first got me started on the series of interactive hands-on experiences that eventually turned into these chapters; and while many of the participants in my seminars in Guadalajara, Mexico D.F., Tlaxcala, Xalapa, and Veracruz were enthusiastic, I owe even more to the skeptics, who forced me to recognize such things as the importance of the “slow" or analytical side of the shuttle movement explored here.
