А. Гурвиц, Р.Курант,Книга Гурвица и Куранта «Теория функций» уже издавалась на русском языке, правда, в виде двух книг (А. Гурвиц, Аналитические и эллиптические функции, М., 1933; Р. Курант, Геометрическая теория функций комплексной переменной, М., 1934). Обе эти книги использовались в качестве учебников по теории функций комплексного переменного, но были популярны и в своем истинном назначении - монографии по теории функций. К настоящему времени изданные у нас книги Гурвица и Куранта стали библиографической редкостью. Поэтому, когда после сорокалетнего перерыва издательство Шпрингера выпустило новое издание «Теории функций», несколько переработанное самим Курантом и дополненное профессором Релем, издательство Наука решило заново перевести эту книгу. В процессе перевода я решил пойти на довольно серьезные отклонения от оригинала. Прежде чем объяснить причины, побудившие меня сделать такой шаг, я хочу рассказать о книге в ее прежней редакции.

В гильбертовом пространстве строится спектральная теория вполне непрерывного симметрического оператора. Как приложение этой теории рассматриваются интегральные уравнения с симметрическим ядром. Приводится доказательство теорем Фредгольма и для интегральных уравнений с несимметрическим ядром, имеющим интегрируемый квадрат.
