Elementary algebra: Structure and Use
Raymond A,This is an introductory text in algebra written for students with no background in algebra and for students who need a review before proceeding further. The improvements in this fifth edition evolved out of generous responses from users of the fourth edition. Most of the changes in this edition have been made with an eye toward making the text even more accessible to students with minimal background and to provide a better transition to material covered in subsequent courses, intermediate algebra courses in particular.

UNDERSTANDING BIOLOGY
PETER H. RAVEN, GEORGE B. JOHNSON,Most teachers who lecture to introductory biology classes have been tempted at one time or another to begin by reading to the class the "Science" section of the daily newspaper. Today's paper, for example, re- ports the identification of the gene that causes cystic fibrosis, a fatal genetic disorder that affects more than 30,000 people in the United States today. For years sci- entists have been searching for the gene, which is car- ried silently by an estimated 1 in every 20 Caucasians; studying it may provide clues that will eventually lead to a cure. This discovery is of great interest to every student in a freshman biology class; to premeds and English majors and students majoring in dance. They all want to know about cystic fibrosis, and also about AIDS and cancer and genetic engineering, because these issues affect their lives. They want to learn enough biol- ogy to understand the newspapers and magazines they read.

Several colleagues, among them our associate editors, joined us in an intensive seminar to review texts, suggest new readings, and discuss methodology in the teaching of the course material. We then set to work and collected our texts in Human Values in Western Culture: I (1987), Human Values in Western Culture: II (1988), and Human Values in Western Culture: I Revised (1988).
